CHANT -STENT

Mary Ann CHANT married Edward STENT in Adelaide in 1856. It has been told that Mary met Edward on the ship Octavia on the way out from England to Australia in 1855. As the story goes Edward was a member of the Octavia crew. He may have changed his name due to the fact that he maybe left the ship AWOL. This happened quite a lot and changing their name made it a bit harder to find them. As the ships were returning to England empty not a lot of effort went into trying to find them unless they were really shorthanded. Anyway, we may never know and the name is proving quite hard to trace back. They had 8 children.

Mary Elizabeth BIGHAM born 11.6.1875 in Stafford Street, South Australia. Mary Elizabeth BIGHAM married 1900 in Melbourne James John NAYLOR Born August, 1871 in Huon and died 29.10.1921.

Mary and James moved to the Eastern Goldfields not long after their first child, Alice was born. At present it is not known if they met in South Australia or Victoria but Victoria would be first guess. They set up house at Kallaroo which was an area east of Boulder and part of the Golden Mile. The original concept of the Golden Mile in 1897 was "from Hannan's Brownhill. Paringa, North Kalgurli and Brookmans Boulder on the north to Lake View South, Boulder Main Reef and Chaffers on the South." It was also amended to include "From the Croesus (Kallaroo) on the North to the Imperial and Hannan's Star on the South". Ironically this equates to a distance of about 3.8km – more than two miles.

James worked underground on the mines on the Kalgoorlie/Boulder Goldfields but unfortunately he contracted Silicosis (a miners complaint) and was sent to Wooroloo Hospital, near Perth, (Western Australia) where all patients with the same complaint were treated.
