He married Elizabeth Roberts 03/09/1825 in Illogan, Cornwall, England. Elizabeth died in 1856 and was buried 15/12/1856 in the Burra Cemetery. She was 54 years of age.

When Elizabeth MALE/CHANT married William Cocking 10/04/1858 William had 10 children to his first wife Elizabeth who had passed away.

William passed away 05/08/1878 aged 74 years in Adelaide. Elizabeth died 18th March 1887 aged 81 Adelaide. It appears that William and his first wife Eliza or Elizabeth arrived in Australia as per this record – COCKING William, Elizabeth nee ROBERTS, John, Joseph, William, Catherine, Richard, Elizabeth, Sarah Ann, Jane, child arrived 1848-08-26 on Constance from London 1848-05-16 via Plymouth 1848-05-26. There were 10 children in all, 5 adults and 5 children under age. It seems that these Cocking children were still living with their father at the time of his marriage to Elizabeth Chant.
