John born 1727, baptised 23/09/1727 and died 1782 married Dianna TEMPLEMAN, Thomas 08/09/1730 West Chinnock died before 1735, Brigard baptised 02/06/1732, Elizabeth (Betty) born 15/05/1735 married 12/02/1760 to William PATTEN 18/01/1729 - 01/06/1810, Thomas born 1735, and William born 14/08/1738 - 1830 married Ann LONG.

In the 1841 census there is an Emma Chant age 4 months recorded with the family, but no record of her birth or death can be found pertaining to this family and she does not appear on the 1851 census. It is a possibility though, that Emma did belong to this family as there is a rather lengthy gap between William and Alexander.

As there is no baptism records for Mary or Anna, Emma may have been the younger sister. Maybe time will reveal something. It is also reported on Alexander's "Death Certificate" that his father's name was Daniel, and that he was a "Soldier" (Daniel could have been William's middle name. Alexander's family could also be referring to an uncle or close friend of the family that Alexander spoke of as his father, due to his father dying when he was very young). We also do not know who recorded this information.

William died, sometime between 1845 and 1851, as it is reported in the 1841 census he was not with Elizabeth and the children but in the 1851 census Elizabeth is recorded as a widow, aged 44 and born in Barrington, Somerset. I have since found that when Alexander married, his father is reported as William CHANT according to the “Digger – South Australian Marriages, Registrations 1842-1916”

Jabez CHANT born 06/05/1832, bp. 28/10/1832 married 19.07.1852 Maria Guppy (bp. 28/02/1837) in Somerset, UK and came to South Australia with Maria in the ship China in 1853.

Elizabeth CHANT married William COCKING in Burra, South Australia on 10/04/1858. Elizabeth was recorded as being 47 and William 52. They married at William's residence in Burra. It seems William had lost his wife Eliza leaving him with a family of 6 children. Although most were in their teens or early 20's there was a young son Samuel aged 8 or 9. Elizabeth Male/Chant/Cocking died 18th March 1887 aged 81 Adelaide.
