CATHERINE MABEL JONES

MABE

25/07/1892 - 14/10/1964 Catherine Mabel Jones was born on 25th July 1892 in Two Mile, GYMPIE, in Queensland to Robert Hugh Jones Born Bangor, Caernarvon, Wales round 1853 and Elizabeth Williams 25.12.1856 – 9.05.1952 born Hollywell, Flintshire, Wales. Robert was a farmer and his Father Hugh Jones was a Miner. Elizabeth's father, Evan Williams was a gardener. Her Mother was Mary Williams (nee Williams).

Mabel fondly known as Mabe married Charles Ernest Williams, 06/03/1889—29/06/1956, fondly known as Ernest or Ern in Boulder, Queens Methodist church on 27/08/1913. Ern was the most beautiful person and very loyal to his family. He was a true gentleman. Mabe did not believe her eldest sister Mary was a true sibling and in her youth destroyed the family bible containing information which would have been very useful now. I would suppose that I would think the same if my older siblings told me that all of a sudden a 10–12 year old suddenly appeared in the family. However, Mabe was a doting Mother and Grandmother.

Mabe and Ern had one child, a daughter:

05.12.1914 - 28.04.1993 Muriel Elizabeth Williams. Born and raised in Kalgoorlie / Boulder, WA. Muriel attended Boulder Primary and Boulder High School. Boulder High School is now known as Eastern Goldfields Senior High School. She went to college, graduated and became a primary school teacher. Muriel married 04/04/1942 Queens Church Boulder, Frank Clifton Bray. 02/05/1911 – 14/10/1990

Muriel wrote the following for an Inner Wheel News Letter. "I was born at Boulder on the 5.12.1914 and was an only child. I attended Boulder Primary School and later Eatern Goldfields High School from which institute I was awarded a Hacket Bursary. I attended the University of W.A. for one year and I was appointed as a monitor to Dalwallinu. Accepted that position and was later transferred to Mullewa. I attended Claremont Teachers Training College and was appointed to Boulder Primary School, which position I held until my marriage to Frank whom I met at a dance in 1938 at the Hippodrome, now Ludins Furniture Shop.

We married in 1942. In 1943 Frank accepted a position at Alice Springs and later joined the Air-Force and I managed the Insurance part of his business, Bennie S Cohan, until he was demobbed in 1945. I taught on a few occasions but was basically a house-wife and during my leisure time played tennis and golf - not very well I'm afraid. Later took up bowls at which I proved to be more proficient winning the championship on several occasions, but my greatest joy was being in the State Country Fours on one occasion.

My involvement in Rotary has had it's rewards as we stayed with our fist Rotary Exchange Student and her husband when we went to the International Conference in Toronto 1984, and also our German Exchange Student with whose parents we stayed. In each instance we were given a right "Royal Welcome." Over the years we have hosted students from England, Canada, America, Japan, Denmark and Thailand. It is now my pleasure to be a member of Inner Wheel and getting to know members whose husbands are involved in Rotary.

Our family consists of one married daughter and three grand children, two boys and one girl."

Frank was a successful businessman on the goldfields and also loved to go prospecting on the weekend with his friends. He once held the lease on the famous Sons of Gwalia mine at Gwalia and also held a lease on the Golden Mile for many years. Muriel and Frank lived out their lives in Kalgoorlie.
